I figured out why sci-fi movies often use insects as their inspiration for their aliens.
It's because they are freaky!!!
I just saw a jumping larva of some sort. I say it was a larva because it was awful small to be a full size insect. It wasn't like a fly larva though. It was black and resembled a cross between an elongated cockroach without tentacles, and a six legged silverfish. But anyways, I went to kill it and it jumped three inches into the air and tried to play dead after that...I'm not sure what that was about. Perhaps it would fool anything dumb enough to try to eat it, but it sure wasn't fooling me. I stabbed at it again with the back side of a pencil. (note to self, use larger object next time.) Predictably, I missed it and it jumped again. This time it skipped the "YOU GOT ME, OH NOES!!" drama and started running around in circles.
I began to wonder if some insects are smarter than other insects of the same species. I've noticed this trend among humans, and perhaps it caries over into the insect world too. With my moment of musing dispensed, I attended to "shoeing" my pet what's-it-thingy into the afterlife...which supposes of course that there is such a thing for insects.
"These shoes were made for walking, and that's just what they'll do. Maybe once I'm finished with destroying a bug or two."
